ShopNBC Jewelry Scams and consumer complaints
What are you really getting when you purchase jewelry and other items from places like QVC and ShopNBC? I personally would never buy the overpriced garbage I see on there. If you really have an eye for jewelry, you'll know you're getting ripped off.
Virginia of Floral Park, NY (10/27/05)
I placed an order on the ShopNBC website. I received an online confirmation that my order had been placed, plus I received an e-mail dated 10/20/05 thanking me for my order.
Four days later I received an e-mail indicating, "due to overwhelming popularity the product is no longer available" I was further advised that my order had been changed to a waitlist order and that they expected to receive the product in their warehouse within the next 37 days. Several days later (10/27/05) I happen to check the website and was surprised to find that the requested product was available.
At this point I called customer service to question the inconsistency. The Customer Service Rep placed my call on hold and indicated he would check on the order. He returned to advise me that no reorder had been placed with the manufacturer and it would appear that I would not be receiving the requested item. He thanked me for bringing the problem with the website to their attention and offered to give me a $10 credit on my next purchase.
Damages: There is no economic damage to report, just my annoyance at the lack of integrity and professionalism of ShopNBC. If ShopNBC had no intention of reordering the item and therefore there was no prospect that I would receive the requested item, a more honest response than "waitlist" would have been appreciated. One would think that with today's technology that ShopNBC would be better equipped to manage their inventory, the lack thereof or at least update their website to show the item was no longer available.

I purchased a Vivitek 56" DLP RPTV from Shop NBC. The delivery company (Home Direct) is unable to figure out, after 17 days, where the item is or when it is going to be delivered.
The $300 rebate offer is to expire in two days, but since I don't have the merchandise, I have no serial number, no receipt, no answers, and I'm unable to cancel. Shop NBC's "system" is down, so I cannot get information from them to comply with rebate.
Damages: No resolution, no answers and no real help, just polite lip service.
Mary of Spring Hill, FL (9/14/05)
Purchased $10,000+ in jewelry from Shop NBC only to find that many of the pieces were not as described. The diamonds were not the quality as stated on the site and by host. Major stones were cracked, broken and even missing when they arrived.
I have been in contact with Shop NBC for over 6 weeks now and have had 2 independent GIA gemologists provide them a written report (their requirement, but at my expense) but Shop NBC says "they see no problem" - the case is closed.
I would like a refund for the damaged merchandise plus a refund for shipping and the appraisal reports.
Silvana Voorhees, NJ (9/8/05):
I purchased two Signity 14k gold bracelets, one for $349 and the other for $379 from Shop NBC. Before the year was up, a stone fell out of my bracelet and my daughters' bracelet broke in half. I took them to my jeweler, but he said he could not fix them because of the way they were manufactured. I called Shop NBC customer service two times in August and again in September. I got the run around from them and all they offered me was $32 and $36 to have them fixed on my own.
I am out $700. I think it is shoddy business practice not to stand behind your products.
Nilda of West Hempstead NY (2/15/05):
In August of 2004, while watching TV I came across an advertisement by Shop NBC of a mattress called Ergo-Pedic. It seemed interesting as they discribed the benefits of using this mattress. At that time they mentioned that it was not necessary to purchase their foundation, as it would fit on any box spring or foundation of the same size. So, I only ordered the mattress.
The mattress was delivered a couple of weeks later. I filled out their 20 year limited warranty and as I kept reading there was a clause that read: "FURTHERMORE, THIS WARRANTY SHALL ONLY APPLY IF THE MATTRESS IS USED WITH AN ERGO-PEDIC FOUNDATION, A SOLID PLATFORM OR ANOTHER FOUNDATION APPROVED BY ERGO-PEDIC." After reading this warning, I decided to order their foundation and avoid any problems down the road. This is where my problems began.
On Sept. 30. 2004, I called and placed an order for a king size foundaton to go with my king size mattress. I had totally forgotten about the foundation, when on Nov. 11, 2004 it occured to me that I hadn't heard from anyone regarding delivery of my foundation. In the meantime I had already been mailed a statement requesting payment. I called Customer Service, and spoke to a lady name Gwen to find out the status of the merchandise, and no one seem to know. I was informed that they would E-mail the supplier for an answer. Again on Nov. 15th I called and spoke to Gwen. For weeks and weeks I could not get an answer as to when I could expect a deliver. I continue to call with no luck.
I spoke to a Supervisor named Kendra and she was no help either. After all this time calling, finally I get a call to arrange for delivery. On Dec.15, 2004 the foundation was delivered. I had the men remove the foundation from the boxes (foundation consist of 2 pcs.) and to place them in my hallway. When my husband came home that night, we removed the old box spring and proceeded to replace it with our new foundation, only to discover that it was the wrong size. They delivered instead a California King, which is too long for my frame and too narrow. So, now my new Ergo-Pedic mattress overlaps on both sides of the foundation.
I called Shop NBC the very next day to inform them of their mistake. After many, many phone calls and two months later, I get a call to correct the problem. They would pick up the wrong foundation and deliver the correct one. But, there was a catch, I had to have the old foundation in the boxes they came in, so they could pick up and deliver. The lady that called is with the supplier (Seally) and they are located in California. I tried to explain to her that I don't keep the boxes of the merchandise I get delivered. She didn't seem to understand my situation and infact was a little rude. I have lost my patience with these people. As of today, Feb. 15th, 2005, I am still waiting for delivry.
The aggravation Shop NBC has put me and my husband thru has us both stressed out. Every time I called and could not get an answer, I would start crying. Furthermore, because we have been sleeping on a mattress that overlaps on both side, we are experiencing back-aches. Also, I received another statement billing me for the foundation, and charging interest charges for late payment. At this point, all I want is to return both the mattress and foundation and get my money back. I don't ever want to hear from Shop NBC again.
Mari of Middle Island NY (1/24/05):
On Dec 24,2004, I ordered a Serta pillowtop mattress. I was told I would have the mattress by 1/7/05. Several phone calls to shop nbc, I was told it was shipped to the trucking company and they will call m with a delivery date. Many calls to the trucing company proved there was no mattress there. Shop NBC still kept telling me they shipped the mattress to the trucking company and we would have it by 1/27/05. Today, I called and was told they can't find the mattress and they needed to put a tracer on it. I could get my refund 7-10ays after that. What is that, ridiculous?
Diane of Chicago (4/16/05):
The worst experience I have ever had. I returned a bracelet 2 days after I received it. They received in on March 29 but refused it, said it was more than 30 days. It took 10 days for me to receive it again. I mailed it again back to them by Fed-Ex. First of all I should have had free shipping because they advertised in Feb if you purchase jewelry all other purchases would be free. Well, that's false advertisement because they charged me for shipping and I have called them numerous times and they say we'll reimburse you for the shipping and they have not.
I have been lied to so many times regarding my refund and have never been so frustrated that my blood pressure has become so high because of their lies. Unbelieveable Company and should be off the air! I deal with QVC and HSN all of the time and have never been treated like this.
Arlene of Washington DC (3/10/04):
Their cancellation methods. My first experence was I placed an order and called in literally minutes to cancel. They told me they could not stop the order. How is that possible? We all know that businesses are bascially run by computer and all it takes is information and the push of a button. This is their way of forcing you to buy merchandise.
A second time I ordered a watch and asked that it be put on the "Value-Pay" program. The Value-pay screen showed on my computer, stating what my payments would be for a period of three months, and then something told me to check my bank account. ShopNBC had taken the full amount. I called them to tell them with but the problem was not remedied. I then went to their site and cancelled the order. Still my money was not returned to my account and I was told it would take three days.
As a result of this last experience with the watch, I now have $700 tied up for three days for something I do not have.
Yolanda of Sacramento CA (11/7/03):
I purchased a down bedspread and a pair of king cases on September 28, 2003. I was enjoying this bedspread, but soon there were feathers everywhere. Well because it's washable I washed it hoping that would help the feather situation. Not so, now my bedspread is covered with white feathers and several of the pockets are missing feathers all together! I have a down comforter on my bed now and have had it for over a year and have nerver had this problem with feathers all over. I think I received a defective bedspread, no way should the feathers have come out like that.
I do not feel I should be out of pocket for the expense of shipping the bedspread and shams back. This box cost me $51.00 to send it back. I don't have a bedspread but I am out $51.00! ShopNBC refused to return the shipping costs.
Harriet of Brooklyn NY (2/22/03):
First time buyer on TV show. Purchased a Tiffany reproduction lamp. Item advertised as a "magnificent hand-made designer Tiffany reproduction lamp". I do not recall the name of the artist but they went into great detail explaining how the lamp is made, the hundreds of pieces of glass that went into this lamp, the quality of the lead, etc, etc. Retail value close to $500 approx.) and yours for only $129.99 They compared other lamps to ones selling for $850K sold by Barbara Streisand, blah, blah and showed the audience pictures from a $1000 Tiffany book comparing these magnificant lamps to the ones they were selling by these "artists."
Now, there was no mention of the fact that this product was manufactured in Asia. Six days later the museum quality piece I held my breath for arrived in box with large black stamp "MADE IN CHINA". How angry and disappointed I was. I believe as a consumer I was sorely misled. I make great efforts to buy products made in the USA or in countries where citizens are paid fair wages and are not exploited. I have called them, and then sent two e-mails and have been dissatisfied with my results.
Initially I called the show and informed them of my complaint and that I would be returning the lamp. I asked to be reimbursed for my shipping and handling costs both ways but they refused any reimbursement, only for the lamp. Thus, I would end up paying $50.00 out of pocket. They said this was not their policy. When I asked to speak to a supervisor they told me to write via e-mail. I then wrote. They said they would reimburse shipping and handling only one way. Their response to me was that it was "assumed" that the lamp was imported. "Assumed?" I will not pay one cent to return this item.
Bobbie of Pendleton IN (8/12/02):
I placed an order via the internet on July 12. Supposedly it was shipped on July 16. It is now August 12 and I have still not received my package which should have taken 10 days at the most. It was a 14 kt neck chain.
My credit card has been charged with this purchase, but I have not received the merchandise. I've contacted their customer service department many times and have been told that I need to call the same number and press "5". When I do that, the recording tells me to call back later. I have sent numerous e-mails and still have gotten no response. |
